At the University of Arizona, we encourage thoughtful and transparent use of artificial intelligence in the classroom. As AI becomes more present in academic settings, instructors play an essential role in guiding students toward responsible, ethical, and academically honest use of these tools.

Setting Clear Expectations

  • Include AI policies in your syllabus Clearly communicate how students can—and cannot—use tools like ChatGPT in your course. The university recommends using the Red-Yellow-Green model to set expectations:
    • Red: AI use is not allowed
    • Yellow: Use is allowed only with instructor permission
    • Green: AI use is encouraged, with proper attribution and guidelines
  • Support academic integrity Unauthorized use of AI may violate the Code of Academic Integrity. Including guidance in your syllabus helps students make informed choices and promotes a culture of honesty and fairness.
  • Encourage responsible AI use When AI use is permitted, provide examples of how it can support learning—such as idea generation, coding support or data analysis—and share citation practices to ensure proper acknowledgment.

Stay Current

AI tools and policies are evolving quickly. The University of Arizona continues to update its guidance to reflect changes in technology, best practices, and student needs. Visit the AI teaching hub regularly for the latest resources and support and subscribe to our newsletter.
