New AI coaching bot may enhance medical education, training

At the University of Arizona Health Sciences Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center, an exciting new project is underway that might just revolutionize medical training. The project revolves around the Artificial Intelligence Medical History Evaluation Instrument, or AIMHEI, a sophisticated AI bot designed to enhance the training of medical and healthcare workers by providing personalized coaching and evaluation.

Dr. Allan Hamilton, a key figure behind AIMHEI and a professor at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, highlights that this AI tool is set to transform medical education by offering customized and targeted feedback to students. This allows for a highly personalized training experience that can adjust to individual student needs in ways previously unimaginable. The AI assesses student interactions during medical interviews, evaluating both interpersonal skills and specific medical knowledge based on established medical education standards.

Moreover, AIMHEI's capability extends beyond mere feedback. It’s designed to handle scenarios where direct patient interaction is limited, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, by generating virtual patient interactions. This not only maintains training consistency but also prepares students for a variety of clinical situations without the need for actual patient contact.

The development of AIMHEI also includes significant contributions from faculty and students within the university's engineering and health sciences departments, showcasing a collaborative effort that bridges multiple disciplines.
